Kathryn Schroeder is a Branch Davidian survivor. In Part 2, she describes how she found what David Koresh was teaching to be convincing and she respected him as a teacher. She attempted to counter his teachings with her own arguments, but he could always provide a plausible answer. She told her husband, Mike Schroeder, that while she did not personally like David Koresh, she loved him and the message he was teaching, and she had to hear more. She felt that her love for God and the desire that she and Mike had to do what God wanted left them no choice but to join the community around David Koresh. Kathy and Mike returned to Miami, sold their possessions and wrapped up their business, and moved to Mount Carmel Center. They spoke to their family members, and Kathy’s mother and sister moved with them to join the group. With Kathy’s three kids from her first marriage, they drove to Texas in a van. During the move, Kathy discovered that she was pregnant with Mike’s baby. Once at Mount Carmel, they learned how to fit in with the community residing there. They participated in observing the “Daily” twice a day (study of scripture and partaking of grape juice and unleavened bread). Kathy was given one of the little houses at Mount Carmel to live in along with her children. When they arrived at Mount Carmel, David Koresh had already presented a “New Light” teaching that husbands and wives were not married to each other; everyone was married to God. The community heard Bible studies from David Koresh in the little building close to the front gate, because the chapel had not yet been built. People living at Mount Carmel were “holding down the fort,” raising the children and looking after the elderly, while other adults spent a lot of time working in California. Kathy and Mike had a difficult time with the New Light teaching, and she learned that Mike was having a particularly hard time with it, but they accepted that they were married to God and not to each other. Mike developed a strong relationship with David Koresh. Kathy felt that her relationship with David Koresh was not as close as others who had been in the community longer. It was easier for Mike to fit into the community than for Kathy. Mike went to California to work, as did Kathy’s sister. Bonnie Haldeman (David Koresh’s mother) and Mary Belle Jones (wife of Perry Jones and Koresh’s mother-in-law) attended the birth of Kathy’s son in March 1990, who was named Bryan. After some hours of labor, Bonnie and Mary Belle decided to take Kathy to the hospital where Bryan was born. Then people returned from California for Passover and the Bible studies that Koresh gave during that period. The whole community at Mount Carmel was involved in raising the children.
