"It's Only a Paper Moon" is a catchy and interesting tune. I've heard this over the years but never really paid much attention to it until I started revisiting the jazz archives. This song has been covered by Paul McCartney, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Chet Baker, Art Blakey, and so many others. Rumor has it the lyricist had just broken up with his girlfriend (or he was dumped?) and this song emerged from heartbreak. But some think the symbolism of the lyrics has more to do with something that appears beautiful and enchanting, but is ultimately insubstantial and temporary. And there are a few who think it speaks about the metaphysical and that "believe in me" really has nothing to do with a person but the object of whatever you desire that you want to manifest...if you only believed you could take it from the imaginative to the real world. Hmm...what do you think it means? LYRICS: You say it's only a paper moon Sailing over a cardboard sea But it wouldn't be make believe if you believed in me Yes, it's only a canvas sky Hanging over a muslin tree But it wouldn't be make-believe if you believed in me Without your love it's a honky-tonk parade Without your love it's a melody played in a penny arcade It's a Barnum & Bailey world Just as phony as it can be But it wouldn't be make-believe if you believed in me
