In the mid-to-late 1800s, leprosy had spread through the Hawaiian Islands; those diagnosed were forcibly exiled to a remote peninsula on the island of Molokai. Families were torn apart. The sick were shipped away, never to return. Their colony was often referred to as the "city of the dead." Into that colony went a Belgian priest named Father Damien. He did not simply preach to the lepers from a distance. He lived among them. He ate with them. He dressed their wounds. He built homes, schools, and hospitals to provide medical care. In 1884, he contracted leprosy himself. He had become one of them. He did not heal them; he could not. But he shared their condition. Throughout Mark 1, Jesus has displayed authority: authority in teaching, authority over demons, and authority over sickness. In this account, we see a man who represents the worst effects of sin’s curse, and we see a Savior whose holiness is not threatened by impurity but overcomes it.
