Born on January 17, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, Johnson has been a key figure in the Chicago blues scene since the 1970s. A self-taught left-handed guitarist who plays a standard right-handed guitar flipped upside down, Johnson follows in the footsteps of legends like Otis Rush and Albert King. His unorthodox technique contributes to his unique and fiery sound, blending traditional blues with soul, funk, and rock influences. Early in his career, Johnson played with Chicago blues greats such as Koko Taylor, Billy Branch, Son Seals, and Valerie Wellington. His international breakthrough came during a tour in Japan in the late 1980s, where he gained a strong following and solidified his reputation as a world-class performer. Though active for decades, his first solo album, My Name Is Carlos Johnson, was released in 2001, recorded in Buenos Aires. This was followed by Don't Mess with the Bluesmen (2004, with Billy Branch), In and Out (2004), and Live at B.L.U.E.S. on Halsted (2007), showcasing his intense live energy and virtuosity. Carlos Johnson’s live shows are legendary for their intensity and raw emotion. Whether on stage in Chicago or touring abroad, he continues to captivate audiences with every performance, keeping the blues alive with power, passion, and authenticity.
