WEEK 4 FIRESIDE CHAT – EDUL 655: PUPIL SERVICES & NONDISCRIMINATION – David P. Perrodin, PhD, delivers the Week 4 Fireside Chat for Viterbo University’s EDUL 655 course, running from February 9–15, 2026. County human services play a vital role in supporting youth with behavioral or mental health needs, especially in home and community settings. Your area’s Community Health Needs Assessment informs how county, medical, and school services intersect to support students. Many of you shared collaborative professional development efforts with neighboring districts—excellent! RAPIDLY DEVELOPING UPDATES: Dr. Perrodin highlights significant changes in Immigration Enforcement Activities, Title IX, and school and 4K door codes—stay informed. WEEK 4 HIGHLIGHTS: IN WEEK 4, WE WILL EXPLORE: Suicide prevention resources, DPI’s Trauma-Sensitive Schools initiative, CDC’s School Connectedness framework, the Wisconsin Indian Education Association, and UW-Madison’s Multicultural Center. REFLECTIVE TEACHING ANNOTATION: Understand the difference between mental health screeners and assessments. Schools are navigating increasing medical assessments tied to OHI, 504 plans, and Long COVID—what long-term solutions should be considered? Additionally, how can school counselors, SROs, and district attorneys guide students on safe dating and deepfake videos? It is essential to ensure students know they are supported and understand how to respond if targeted. SYLLABUS FOCUS: Read Chapter 1 of School of Errors—are students being denied authentic life experiences, or is the Metaverse fostering inclusivity? How might this impact pupil services? With eSports expanding, should we explore Metaverse clubs? Finally, read my article on Abeyance Agreements for a perspective that may challenge your district’s current approach.
