Henderson, MD, Director, Neurocritical Care and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, explains how neurocritical care improves outcomes for patients with neurological illnesses. Neurocritical care is a field of medicine which treats patients with life threatening neurological injuries such as cerebral hemorrhages, strokes, subarachnoid hemorrhages or conditions that can affect pulmonary function such as myasthenia gravis. Specialists in neurocritical are trained specifically to treat patients with these diseases. This specialized care improves patient outcomes. A cerebral hemorrhage is a rupture of an artery which disperses blood throughout the brain. The rupture of the artery could be due to longstanding hypertension (high blood pressure), an aneurysm or a vascular malformation. Minimizing swelling in the brain is extremely important after a cerebral hemorrhage. In some cases swelling can be managed with medication. If medications are not effective surgery may be performed to reduce disability. New treatments for cerebral hemorrhage include the use of surgical techniques to put a small catheter in the brain to drain some of the blood and reduce the size of the hemorrhage. This type of endovascular technique may take place at the bedside or in the operating room. Outcomes associated with this technique are currently being studied to determine how patients are doing at 90 days out and one year out.
