In this episode of View-Master Travels, I visit one of the most iconic natural wonders in the world — Niagara Falls. This place has always fascinated me, not just for its beauty and power, but for its wild history. From collapsing cliffs and lost waterfalls to the pirate ships and live bears that once went over the edge, Niagara has seen more than its share of unbelievable events. Using my vintage View-Master reels, I explore how the falls have changed over the decades. These 3D images from the 1940s through the 1970s reveal a Niagara that’s both familiar and completely transformed — with landmarks like Prospect Point and Terrapin Rocks disappearing altogether. I trace these changes through old maps, rare photos, and firsthand visits to the same spots to see what’s left today. Along the way, I dive into the human side of Niagara’s story — from the lawless 1800s “Den of Forty Thieves,” to the birth of hydroelectric power that lit entire cities. I explore abandoned tunnels, fallen observation points, and the famous Maid of the Mist boats that have carried visitors into the spray for more than a century. Each View-Master image opens a window into a vanished version of the Falls. Today, Niagara may look as wild as ever, but beneath the surface it’s one of the most engineered natural sites in the world — carefully controlled and monitored to prevent another collapse. Standing there, though, with the roar in your ears and the mist on your face, it still feels untamed. That’s what makes Niagara Falls so extraordinary — a force of nature that only pretends to be under our control.
