Max Reger (1873-1916) was a German composer, conductor, pianist, organist and teacher. A prolific composer who died young, his works are classically rooted, carefully composed, and deeply unconventional. His Opus 135A presented 30 well-known German Chorale Preludes for pipe organ, with Reger's individual language. The composer then had his friend Karl Kämpf--himself a brilliant harmoniumiste--arrange the set for reed organs, including registrations for both the C-compass, pressure European harmonium, and the F-compass, suction "Normal-Harmonium" then being built in Germany, a more standarized version of American reed organs. Most of the Chorales are printed as one page of music with the German registrations, and harmonium registrations given as a footnote. Here we have the Advent hymn "Wachet auf" (Sleepers Wake in English) played on an Amerian chapel-model reed organ, built to the specifications of a German Normal-harmonium. The stop registrations are all in the score, changing voices, adding and cancelling the Octave Coupler, and using Full Organ for the penultimate phrase. The instrument is a Mason & Hamlin reed organ, built in Boston in 1915: Style 93BF, No. 239146, and # 4874 in the Reed Organ Society database. The black walnut cabinet contains five ranks of reeds throughout, plus a 16' SubBase. Our friend Kenneth C. Pratt restored this instrument about ten years ago. Performed by Michael Hendron, recorded 15 December 2025. Happy Advent everyone!
