The Donkey in the Lion’s Skin In a modest village there lived a dhobi who owned a single donkey that helped him carry heavy bundles of laundry every day. Though the dhobi loved his animal companion, he was stingy with its food, and the poor beast grew thinner with each passing week. One evening, exhausted and unable to bear the sight of his frail donkey collapsing under its load, the dhobi stumbled upon a dead lion in the forest. An idea sparked in his mind: he would drape the lion’s hide over the donkey, hoping the disguise would protect it from predators and perhaps even make it appear stronger. When the dhobi slipped the hide onto the donkey, the animal’s silhouette changed dramatically. The once‑scattered donkey now strutted with a fierce, regal air. He sent the “lion” out to graze in the fields, and the villagers, seeing the majestic creature, fled in terror, leaving the donkey to feast undisturbed. For several days the donkey grew platter and bolder, enjoying the unintended respect that the lion’s skin afforded him. But deception has a fragile foundation. One morning, while the donkey was munching on grass, it let out a loud, unmistakable bray that echoed across the fields. The farmers, hearing the unmistakable sound of a donkey beneath the hide, realized they had been fooled. Angry and embarrassed, they seized the animal, beat it mercilessly, and put an end to its charade. The dhobi returned later that day to find his faithful companion lifeless, the lion’s skin torn and bloodied. The dhobi was overwhelmed with remorse. He understood that his greed and deceit had not only cost his donkey its life but also brought shame upon himself. He could not even voice his sorrow to the villagers, fearing the same fate. The story reminds us that honesty is the cornerstone of trust, and that shortcuts built on lies quickly crumble. Moral: Deception may grant temporary advantage, but it ultimately leads to loss and disgrace. Advice: Treat those who depend on you with generosity, neglect erodes both the giver and receiver. When faced with a problem, seek solutions that honor integrity rather than resorting to false appearances. Remember that true strength comes from character, not from masks you wear.
