Lessons learned: Why do we fall at times? Unlike Peter, we must realize that there is a gap between perception and reality. Peter believed he was stronger than the others and was ready to die. Yet the reality was that Peter’s ego blocked what Jesus was really saying. Jesus’ words only resonated with Peter after the denial. How often do we allow our self-sufficiency to block our reality? Peter’s failure was rooted in placing his confidence in himself and his own feelings of bravery. Often, we follow the path of self-sufficiency, believing we can sustain ourselves, but when we trigger inner fear, our reaction is either to fight or to flee. After the denial, Peter left the area quickly to hide. Earlier, Peter focused on his inner desire, the willing spirit of NO denial, but when death became prevalent, the flesh became weak, and spiritual battle became real. Peter proudly exalted his own abilities by stating, “Even if all are made to stumble, I will not. If I have to die with you (Jesus), I will not deny you!” Such a statement effectively became bait for the accuser to use against him, but it caused the bitter weight of realization. How often do we need the same type of reality check in our lives? What does it take for us to realize that we cannot sustain ourselves?
