Between 1922 and 1996, over 30,000 women and girls were imprisoned in Ireland's Magdalene Laundries. Run by Catholic nuns, these institutions forced women to perform unpaid labor for up to 14 hours a day. Many entered as teenagers. Many never left. In 1993, workers discovered 155 bodies in a mass grave at a former laundry in Dublin — 22 more than records showed. Some still had broken bones in plaster casts. In 2013, the Irish government formally apologized. The religious orders have never contributed a single euro to survivor compensation. This is their story — one Ireland tried to forget. — SOURCES: McAleese Report (2013) — Official Irish Government investigation https://www.justice.ie/en/JELR/Pages/...
