One of the most surprising days of my China trip was getting to see the diāolóu of Kaiping, which are these huge and quite luxurious towers built back in the 19th and 20th century. I learned how many Chinese emigrants who went to work in Canada, Australia and particularly the USA, brought their fortunes back to their hometown to build these sturdy residences to help protect their families from the conflicts of those times. Although I didn't fully understand our tour guide at the time, I got the general idea that the buildings and belongings left inside represent a beautiful blend of Chinese and Western culture. Many of the families that lived in the towers I visited were overseas Chinese (华侨) and eventually had future generations of Chinese-Canadians, Americans, Australians etc., living abroad. To this day, there are some diaolou that still has some residents living in them. Most of the ones I visited seemed to be closed off or used for tours and it was so cool to be at the top of one of these towers overlooking the farmland. I truly never expected to see these buildings in the middle of the countryside in China. As a first gen. Chinese-Canadian, I was really touched to visit this UNESCO World Heritage site with so much history regarding overseas Chinese families and their lives back then. 10/10 would recommend!
