The second of a BBC radio series of nine programmes introduced by Ivor Keys, each focusing on a different English cathedral. This edition was broadcast on 17 July 1981 and featured the choir of Beverley Minster, directed by Alan Spedding, with John Long (Assistant Organist). “Our national heritage is nowhere richer than in our cathedrals and the music which resounds in them. Ivor Keys surveys some of the finest examples in a series of nine programmes” [Radio Times]. This was the second programme in the series. The others featured Chichester, Exeter, Liverpool, Salisbury, Durham, Wells and Winchester. All the music heard here was recorded for the broadcast, including the anthem ‘Ponder my words’ by Langdon Colborne, who was Organist & Choirmaster at the Minster for just a year (1874), when he wrote this anthem for the Minster choir. This is the only known recording of the work.
