Castles or in this case a Fort, are amazing! This fort was built in the time of King Henry VIII to protect Dartmouth. It is in Devon, England roughly between Exeter and Plymouth, located here on the River Dart where it was the last line of defence should there be an attack down the river. Be sure to stay to the end to hear all the amazing details This is Bayard’s Cove Fort, in Dartmouth, Devon It is a grade 1 listed building Dartmouth in the 1500’s was an important port, and was a massive potential target for enemies of the country due to its wealth and shipping power. Bayard’s Cove Fort was built to supplement the defences nearer the river mouth of Dartmouth Castle and across the river Kingswear Castle,. It was complete by 1537. The decision to build the fort clearly shows the concern about attack from sea. Dartmouth Castle, further down the river had both considerable firepower and control of a chain across the harbour to stop enemy shipping getting through. Sources English Heritage Historic England
