One of the hardest questions for historians to answer is how Jews and Judaism have survived for millennia. While there are many ways to approach this subject, there is no simple answer. One could think about Torah and Jewish belief as the pillar of Jewish communities, or how Jewish law bound Jews together, or how the many facets of Jewish culture worked together to create Jewish identity. Another way to think about this fundamental question is to consider how Jewish communities created and supported institutions. What kind of institutions did we create and in what specific practices did we engage in to ensure that Judaism would survive? The bigger question is how have Jews provided a legacy for future generations?
