Who created Cohiba? The Story: The story as it goes, in the 1960s when Fidel Castro saw one of his bodyguards "Chicho" also known as Bienvenido Perez Salazar smoking a slim and slender cigar. It was as he described, very aromatic, very elegant. Chicho gave one to Castro and was amazed by it, he then wanted to know the roller who turned out to be Eduardo Rivera Irizarri, then a roller in the La Corona factory in Havana who rolls some of this special blend and vitola. After knowing Rivera, he smoked nothing else. For awhile, Rivera rolled this at home and at the factory for Castro. Castro was so enamoured by it, that he quickly had his secretary Celia Sanchez and several other officials find a spot for Rivera to setup his factory. They settled on the residence of the former sugar baron, a massive white villa. Today it is known as the El Laguito Factory. Rivera started his career rolling at the Por Larranaga factory in 1957, did many side gigs before setting up at El Laguito. When deciding on the brand name, they were thinking of how the native people called the tobacco plant Cohiba, and thus adopted it. The initial batch of workers were just a handful, 20 rollers mostly women as Rivera suggested that women were more delicate and meticulous with the job. Whilst Cohiba was a diplomatic gift, Castro made sure that he was the only one giving them out up until 1982 when it went global. Today, cigar aficionados across the world consider Cohiba as the world's top luxury cigar.
