Scientists to trial mitochondrial donation in UK babies

The first babies treated with mitochondrial transfer may be born in the UK soon to prevent the transmission of mitochondrial disease. This would see the mother’s faulty mitochondria be replaced with a healthy substitute from a donor during IVF. Mitochondrial replacement therapy has already led to the birth of two children in Mexico and Ukraine. Scientists from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Mitochondrial Research at Newcastle University will attempt to create the first three-person babies in the UK for two women with rare genetic conditions they could otherwise pass on to their children.
