Wifey and I went down to Naha yesterday to get my International Driving Permit so that it's all done before I move over to Thailand. The expiration date on it is directly tied to the expiration of my Japanese SOFA license, so it at least gives me a few months to get my Thai license sorted once we get there. So we'll tackle that concurrently while getting after marriage registration and my own longer-term visa. Anyhow, we've got that going on, plus submitting additional documents that are required for my son and I to get our extended (60 day) tourist visas. I really like the eVisa website that Thai authorities are using nowadays. It's modern and they're pretty responsive to updates.
