Giant Sumo wrestlers WOW London as competitors arrive for rare tournament outside of Japan

Spectators at this week’s Grand Sumo Tournament in London are being warned they could end up with “a wrestler in their lap” as the capital gets up close to Japan’s national sport for the first time in 34 years. From Wednesday, Britain’s historic Royal Albert Hall hosts just the second official sumo event ever held outside Japan in the sport’s 1,500-year history. Opened in 1871, the Victorian landmark—famed for hosting Muhammad Ali, The Beatles and Adele—also staged the first official overseas sumo tournament in 1991, won by Nobuyoshi Hakkaku, now chairman of the Japan Sumo Association. Sumo returns for a five-day run with nightly pageantry: the dohyō-iri ring-entrance ceremony and around twenty bouts featuring more than forty Makuuchi rikishi from Japan’s top division. A champion will be crowned on Sunday. With sumo so rarely taken abroad due to exacting hosting requirements, London’s showcase is a rare honour on British soil.
