Hello you wunderbar subscribers! Since I've been re-uploading shows from the European Express Tour that have gotten upgrades since the original Youtube uploads, I think giving the Vienna show from the aforementioned tour is the right thing to do! This upload is dedicated to TheEltonBootlegs since he's a big fan of this show and sat with me during the original transfer from 12 years ago! I hope he comments all over the videos for this show since I enjoy reading his thoughts. The European Express Tour of 1984 is my all-time favorite Elton John tour of his career due to the energetic performances, the good setlist, the varying piano improvisations on select songs, and Elton’s powerful singing. This show in particular ranks among my favorites from the era and if new shows, upgrades, or superior audio sources surface from this tour leg, you can bet that I'll drop what I'm doing to go and listen to them. This merge of copies of the show for the Youtube upload was a project that "EltonStuff" and myself worked on as his copy of the show had better quality, but missed a few songs. I re-transferred my older copy with newer equipment and combined the versions together. The overall quality is generally pretty good with the exception of the occasional tape wobble and is mostly complete apart from a few cuts throughout and missing “Sad Songs (Say So Much).” The band sound amazing on this show with Davey turning in some of his best guitar work from the tour and Dee’s bass being highlighted throughout this recording. Elton is also in fantastic vocal shape with his deliveries being full of confidence and with great power. If you want an amazing show from this tour, then this is definitely one of the best ones to get! Now... time to go through the performances! “Tiny Dancer” has Elton sounding slightly rough (he warms his voice up as the song goes on) and Davey extends his guitar solo section just before the final verse starts. It’s certainly a unique take on the song! “Hercules” has Elton’s voice primed and ready for combat and he slays the vocals while Davey plays an amazing guitar solo. “Rocket Man” is a top notch version from the tour and the improvisational sections feature Elton’s powerful singing and the band’s prowess. “Daniel” is a very energetic performance with Elton sounding strong throughout. “Restless” is one of the better earlier versions as Elton doesn’t flub the words (unlike the Stuttgart and Munich performances) and Dee’s bass playing sounds fantastic on this version. “Candle In The Wind” is a fantastic all-around version from the era and Elton belts the ending out amazingly. “The Bitch Is Back” features another outstanding Davey solo and Elton sings one of his best renditions of the song. “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” features a great crowd atmosphere and Elton sounding strong on the vocals. “Bennie And The Jets” features Elton’s strong singing (along with some amusing tonal changes) with a great piano improvisation section and “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word” sounds great overall with Elton’s voice especially shining. “Philadelphia Freedom” is one of the best versions from the tour as Elton nails the vocals and Fred’s synthesizer is high in the mix (adding some great additions to the song). The rest of the band also sound great on this version. “Blue Eyes” sounds great overall with the vocal harmonies sounding excellent. “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues” sounds fantastic on this show with Elton singing the song aggressively and the crowd atmosphere adding to the overall listening experience. “Kiss The Bride” is a top 1984 version with everybody firing on all cylinders. “One More Arrow” is one of the best versions ever as Elton sings the song with more ease compared to other versions. “Too Low For Zero” has fantastic vocal harmonies and Elton delivering one of his best renditions of the song live. “I’m Still Standing” is extremely energetic with Elton’s vocals sounding strong and an audience member close to the taper nearly drowns out Elton during the choruses! The only real fault of the performance is that the backing vocals are off in spots. “Your Song” sounds great on all fronts. “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” is one of the best 1984 versions as Elton sounds amazing and the band play the (very) uptempo rocker with an unrelenting energetic assault. “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” is a strong rendition with crowd members around the taper singing along. “Crocodile Rock” is fast and furious (along with being a great performance in general). Lastly, "Song For Guy" highlights the amazing atmosphere! ENJOY!!!
