Existence of a high-cycle fatigue failure phenomenon in brick masonry is long-established. Fatigue strength has been shown to depend not only on the stress range but also on the mean/maximum cyclic stress and the quasi-static compressive strength of the material. All these tests are carried out on masonry prisms under compression. Arch failure is characterised by the formation of hinges and ring separation. Tests carried out on prisms do not represent the actual arch behaviour. A new assessment procedure (SMART) has now been proposed for masonry arch bridges which considers the possibility of structural degradation with repeated loading. Hence, tests on full-scale arches have preferred over prisms. After thousands of cycles a linear elastic behaviour is observed.
