The Gaia telescope, launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2013, has been one of the most powerful space observatories dedicated to astrometry — the precise measurement of stars’ positions, distances, and motions. After over a decade of exceptional service, the retirement of Gaia marks the end of an era in stellar cartography. During its mission, Gaia mapped over two billion stars, creating the most detailed 3D map of our galaxy ever assembled. Its retirement is due not to failure, but to the natural degradation of its instruments and the fuel required for orientation and data transmission. Scientists will be analyzing Gaia’s data for decades, and although its retirement ends active operations, the legacy of its findings will continue to transform our understanding of the Milky Way, stellar evolution, and the dynamic structure of the cosmos.
