Dick was chosen for his charisma, despite not having any dancing experience. However, he was a quick learner. Dick's performance was successful, resulting in a Tony Award. In 1961, he took to television in The Dick Van Dyke Show. A massive success, the show stayed on the air until 1965. During that time, Dick could also be seen on film in such features as 1963's Bye Bye Birdie and j1964's Mary Poppins. By the early 1970s, Dick had developed a severe dependency on alcohol. He checked into a rehab clinic. Upon returning from the clinic, he learned that his wife had also checked in as a result of a secret dependency on prescription medications. Dick was completely unaware of his wife's problem, proving that the two's relationship had become extremely distant. After their rehab stays, the two began taking trial separations from each other. During this time, Dick developed a romantic relationship with his agent's secretary, Michelle Triola. Dick and Michelle entered into an extra-marital affair that lasted for many years before Dick and Margie's divorce was finalized.
