The Copa MX was Mexico’s national cup competition, first introduced in 1933. It quickly became one of the country’s most important tournaments, especially in the early decades, as it brought together clubs from across the nation. The cup went through several phases: the amateur era (1932–1942), the professional era starting in 1942–43, and later revivals in 1987–1992, 1994–1997, and finally from 2012 until 2020. During its long history, it was known under different names, including Copa Presidente in the 1960s. Clubs like América, Cruz Azul, and León were among the most successful, with América holding the record for the most titles. In its modern format (2012–2020), Copa MX featured 24 teams from both Liga MX and Ascenso MX, giving lower-division sides the chance to compete against top-tier clubs. Sponsored under names like Copa Corona MX, it also connected to other competitions such as the Supercopa MX. Despite its popularity, the tournament was discontinued in 2020 due to fixture congestion and restructuring in Mexican football. Monterrey won the final edition, closing the book on nearly nine decades of history. The Copa MX remains remembered as a competition that gave fans thrilling matches and allowed smaller clubs to challenge the giants of Mexican football.
