The case's victim, whose real name was Jyoti Singh but was given the pseudonym "Nirbhaya" (fearless) by the media, was traveling with a male friend when they were attacked by six men, including the bus driver and a minor. After being severely beaten and gang-raped, the victims were thrown from the moving bus. She succumbed to her injuries 13 days later. This horrific event sparked unprecedented public outrage and mass protests across India, demanding justice and stronger laws for women's safety. The protests were so intense they led to a national debate on gender-based violence, women's rights, and the accountability of the justice system. Key Events and Legal Outcome The Incident: On December 16, 2012, Jyoti Singh and her friend boarded a private bus in Delhi. The six men on the bus proceeded to assault, rob, and brutally gang-rape her. They also severely beat her friend with an iron rod.
