Recorded for Virginia Archives Month, this virtual panel discusses archiving underrepresented Virginia history. How can archives build community? What is the value of seeing your experience represented in history? What role do archivists play in advocating for previously hidden stories? Blake McDonald, a survey and grants specialist with the Department of Historic Resources, moderates as the panelists describe their work as archivists and memory workers who preserve and share the histories of traditionally marginalized communities. The panel includes Nix Mendy, digital archivist for OUTWORDS (The Outwords Archive, Inc.); Katie Stueckle with the Southwest Virginia LGBTQ History Project; Clint Whitten, Ph.D., associate director for the Center for Rural Education at Virginia Tech; and Lydia Neuroth, manager of the Library’s Virginia Untold: The African American Narrative project. This program was presented by Virginia Archives Month, the Library of Virginia and OUTWORDS. Programming assistance was provided by the Friends of the Virginia State Archives, a 501(c)(3) organization. More about Virginia Archives Month at https://www.lva.virginia.gov/events/vam
