Tips: 1. Make sure you can drive up to the apiary Hives get heavy fast and if you're keeping many of them the amount of woodenware you'll need to trek in and out is significant. I would also be sure that there's never any running water between the road and the apiary. Watch out for dry creekbeds, etc. 2. Don't set up a second bee yard where you can only keep a few hives Keeping a second apiary is extra effort. You have to drive to the apiary and lug equipment around. It's overall a benefit, but it comes at the cost of putting in more effort. I would want to keep a minimum of 8 hives at the new apiary, but 28 is better. 3. Pay in honey This is the neighbor tax on steroids. You want to keep your landowners happy with as much honey as they'll take. The amount of extra honey you can make from having more space will shock you, pass on some of that extra honey to the people who made it possible. Benefits: 1. Keep more hives Unless you own a massive acreage, there's a limit to how many hives you can keep at your house. Growing your operation means growing into other yards. A second bee yard is the first step towards growth. 2. You can reorient hives easily Bees need to move less than 3 feet or more than 3 miles. A second apiary give you a spot that fits the bill. You can move your aggressive hives there while you're requeening, or you can reorganize your home yard if you need to. 3. Gain supporters People hosting your hives become very invested in your success. They want to know that the bees are doing well and that you're meeting the goals you've set for yourself. It is a generous act to host hives and the people who do it are amazing supporters. #beekeeping #beginnerbeekeeping #honey #honeybee #beekeeper
