Gameplay of the unplayable character/NPC/Boss Tanya in the Steam/PC Port of Netherrealm Studio’s Mortal Kombat X. If you’re wondering how different NPC Tanya is from DLC Tanya, the answer is “a lot”. She is really, REALLY basic here; only a few combo strings, and only a few special moves too. The other three NPCs were toned down versions of their MK9 counterparts, while Tanya here is a returning character who of course initially debuted in MK4. Yeah, one of the only well-liked characters from MK4, and she didn’t even make the initial roster. Yeesh. I covered her back in Deception and was pretty harsh on her there, mainly because she was just so goddamn generic. That may have been why Tanya was assigned as an NPC here; a character they wanted to give some lip-service too without actually having to do much with her. Her moveset speaks to that effect as well, with a generic fireball and a couple of decently powerful flipping kick attacks, as well as a few very basic combos. Also, aerial fireballs, cause she had those before as well I guess. She can still deal some quite nice damage when you get the timings down, you can tell she really was just meant to be a throwaway appearance here. That changed, however, as she was later made a proper DLC character, which we’ll be seeing next time. From NPC to legit character her design doesn’t change much, but she does go from having normal eyes here to having cloudy eyes in her DLC version, reminiscent of Storm from the X-Men series. Tanya’s basic here therefore, and not really worth playing as unless you really like trying out beta movesets. Which, of course, I do. She’s so basic here that it’s an intriguing contrast to how her DLC form turned out, which is to say more fledged out but still a bit generic. We’ll see more of the differences between this Tanya and her DLC-self next time, as I move onto the game’s rather extensive number of DLC characters.
