Its funny how, sometimes you can't see clearly how a person has impacted your life until they're gone. We met Joe years back, in the west country, a place he loved so dearly. Joe was hosting the campsite that I was staying in, he came around to chat about the place, we got talking about wildlife photography, and specifically the wild horses that frequent the valley nearby, and the rest is history. The year after that, Joe moved on to a different career and offered his old job to Meg and I, connecting us with the organization he worked for. That simple gesture turned into two of the most magical summers of our lives, living close to nature, surrounded by wildlife and wild horses, incredible. We'd count on seeing Joe regularly, camped in his favorite campsite, or posted up along the flats somewhere flying "snoopy" around, looking for his cherished wild horse friends. We'd get all the excited updates about who's doing what, what stallion had stolen what mare, who had a goal, should the father was, and the lineage of them all. Joe knew everything about almost every horse on elk flats. He loved them and protected them with the ferocity of a mother grizzly, except he could be a bit scarier. In the off season, we'd hear from Joe periodically, either to check in with us, to see if we'd been out west, and how everyone's doing, or, to let us know he just got back and all that he'd seen and learned. The man had a heart of gold. The trip that this video was filmed on, we had went out with the intent to remember Joe, go to all his favorite places, and see all his old friends. We were met, at misty sunrise, by the largest number of wild horses we've ever encountered in the area at this time of year, Including one of Joe's favorite stallions, Doc, and they were clearly ready to put on a show for us. We could feel Joe's presence, as if he was smiling down on us, watching it all roll out, as if he'd orchestrated the whole scenario as a kind of parting gift to us. Gift received, Joe, with open hearts. Thanks for everything , big guy. We'll miss you, we love you, and we'll keep an eye on your beloved wild horses, as I'm sure you will too.
