(27 Oct 2013) The Japanese army held a major military parade attended by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Asaka training camp in Saitama on Sunday. More than 50 aircraft along with 3900 soldiers took part in the ceremony at the training camp in suburban Tokyo. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe addressed the troops and thousands of spectators at the event. "The reality today is that Japan's security situation is increasingly critical over threats to our country's sovereignty and provocations from North Korea's weapons of mass destruction and development of ballistic missiles, " he told the crowd. The military parade is held every year, but this year it comes amid growing tensions in the biggest territorial flare-ups in years over the a group of disputed islands. Japan protested on Friday to South Korea for holding a military exercise on a disputed island cluster in the Sea of Japan claimed by Tokyo but controlled by Seoul. Japan said a landing drill by South Korean navy and coast guard personnel on the island group, called Takeshima by Japan and Dokdo by South Korea, violated Japanese sovereignty. Japan is also in dispute with China over the sovereignty of islets in the East China Sea in what the Japanese call the Senkaku chain - and the Chinese call the Diaoyu. The islands, also claimed by Taiwan, are important mainly because of their location near key sea lanes. They are surrounded in the East China Sea by rich fishing grounds and as-yet untapped underwater natural resources.
