In this video, see what it's like being on the Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF) thanks to ITA alumna, Jada Downing! TAPIF stands for Teaching Assistant Program in France (French: Teaching Assistant Program in France). It is a program organized by the French Ministry of Education and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy that recruits native English speakers to work as teaching assistants in French schools across France and the overseas territories. The primary aim of the TAPIF program is to enhance English language learning in French schools while promoting cultural exchange between France and English-speaking countries. TAPIF participants, also known as "assistant(e)s d'anglais," assist local French teachers in English language classrooms, typically in primary or secondary schools, by providing language support, leading conversation practice, and assisting with cultural activities. Key points about the TAPIF program: Eligibility: Applicants must be native English speakers from an English-speaking country, possess at least two years of university education, and be between 20 and 35 years old at the start of the program. Duration: The program generally runs for around seven to nine months, typically from October to April or May, aligning with the French academic year. Work Responsibilities: TAPIF participants work around 12 to 15 hours per week in schools, assisting teachers with English language lessons. They often conduct small group activities, conversation sessions, and cultural presentations to help students improve their English proficiency and cultural awareness. Locations: Participants are placed in various regions across France, including urban and rural areas, as well as in the French overseas territories. Language Proficiency: While knowledge of French is beneficial, the program does not necessarily require French language proficiency as the main focus is on assisting in English language instruction. The TAPIF program offers participants a chance to experience French culture, improve their language skills, and gain valuable teaching experience while living and working in France. Successful applicants receive a stipend, access to health insurance, and assistance with obtaining the necessary work visa. The application process typically involves submitting an application form, academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement detailing the applicant's motivation and teaching aspirations. Applicants undergo a selection process conducted by the French Embassy or Consulate in their home country.
