DMA or direct memory access is a capability of microcontrollers and processors that allows peripherals to have access to the memory of the system without the CPU intervening, which speeds up memory operations and leaves the CPU available for other tasks. In low power embedded system especially, the fact that the CPU is not involved in this process means that it can spend more time in low power mode, which, in turn, obviously reduces the power consumption of the system.
