(12 Sep 2019) LEAD IN: A new library has opened at a migrants detention centre in Ganfouda in honour of the late US ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens. It's seven years since Stevens was killed, along with three employees, in an attack on the US consulate in Benghazi. STORY-LINE: "United Against Terrorism" reads a plaque at a new library inside the migrants detention centre in Ganfouda, west of Benghazi. The library has been opened to commemorate the late US ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens on the seventh anniversary of his death. He and three colleagues were killed in an attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, following protests in front of the building in 2012. Opening the library today is Libyan Foreign Minister Abdulhadi Lahweej. In a press statement in front of the library he says: "Our message today is that we are united against terrorism and terrorists, and we send a deep message of solidarity and condolences to the families of Ambassador Christopher and his colleagues." "To make our country an oasis of security, stability and peace, on this occasion, we open the scientific library at the Qanfouda Migrants Centre in Benghazi, in the name of Ambassador Christopher, in honour of him and his country in our joint war against terrorism and terrorists.," he adds. Lahweej says the world must work with Libya to end militant violence. "This war is a world war. Terrorism has no homeland, no nationality and no religion. Those who are fighting now are of different nationalities and not Libyans, and therefore the responsibility to fight this phenomenon is a global collective responsibility. We wanted to name a scientific library after the name of the murdered ambassador is a symbolic message that we are together against terrorism." Libya is divided between a weak UN-supported administration in Tripoli and a rival government in the east of the country. Each is backed by an array of militias and armed groups fighting over resources and territory.
