If you spend enough time railfanning, you'll probably eventually see railroad crossing gates go down and back up without a train actually passing through the crossing. You might even see it happen four times in four different places, as shown in this video... Clip #1 (0:30): Sometimes, a mechanical malfunction causes the gates to go down and back up with no train in sight. Recorded on Nurrenbern Road in Evansville, Indiana, on May 16, 2020. Clip #2 (1:01): And sometimes, a train slowly approaches off-camera, getting close enough to activate the gates but stopping before reaching the crossing. Recorded on Claremont Avenue in Evansville, Indiana, on June 27, 2020. Clip #3 (1:33): Ditto, but with the gates staying lowered for a longer period of time before going back up. Recorded on Bayou Creek Road in Evansville, Indiana, on August 30, 2020. Clip #4 (2:38): You can also have a train approaching in the distance, with the gates getting a bit too excited and activating prematurely. (The train actually came about a minute later.) Recorded in the rain on Allens Lane in Evansville, Indiana, on July 31, 2020.
