Both the Hoka Mach 4 and the Puma Velocity Nitro are long distance daily training running shoes. The Hoka Mach 4 costs $130 U.S. dollars while the Puma Velocity Nitro cost $120 U.S. dollars. The Mach 4 weights 7.9oz or 223g for a men's size 9 on my scales while the Velocity Nitro weights 9.1oz or 258g. They both feature an engineered mesh upper that is lightweight and breathable. I found the Velocity Nitro to run a little long. I had more than a thumb width from my longest toe to the end of the shoe but not so long that I'd go down a size. I would order both shoes true to size. The tongue is thin on both shoes. The Mach 4 and is semi-gusseted while the Velocity Nitro is a full gusset. Both laid flat on me feet and are comfortable. The eyelet chain is standard with reinforced material both on the outside and on the inside of the shoe which adds durability and longevity to both shoes. The one notable difference is that the eyelet chain is a bit wider in the Velocity Nitro. The only concern I have with a wider eyelet chain is the potential to feel the laces dig in to the top of my feet. So far, I have not had that experience but it is something that I'm going to pay attention to as I log more miles in the Velocity Nitro. The heel collar and tab are well padded in both shoes and are comfortable especially for your longer run efforts. The heel tab on the Hoka Mach 4's feature an anatomically correct achilles construction. Hoka and Puma also include a removable insole that adds additional cushion and comfort to your ride. The heel counter in both shoes have a good deal of structure that helps to give you a stable and secure ride. The Hoka Mach 4 however does have more structure in the heel counter the adds to a feeling of stability. The midsole in the Mach 4 is made of their ProFly Foam combined with a rubberized EVA foam material that also doubles as the outsole. This combination of ProFly Foam and the Rubberized EVA foam, deliver a cushioned and propulsive feeling through your foot strike to your toe off. The midsole also features and early stage Meta-Rocker that also assist in the propulsive feeling while creating a smooth transition through your gait cycle. The midsole in the Puma Velocity Nitro has two foams. They feature their Nitrogen infused or Nitro foam that runs from heel to toe with a more dense foam located just in the heel. This foam delivers a great deal of energy return as you roll through your gait cycle. The outsole in the Hoka Mach 4 is a rubber infused EVA foam that is light and durable adding to the longevity of the Hoka Mach 4. While the Puma Velocity Nitro features their Pumagrip rubber on the outsole. There is plenty of the Pumagrip to protect their Nitro foam. It runs from heel to toe and is thick adding to durability and the traction that you get while running on different surfaces. Overall, I found both shoes to be light, fast, and smooth to run in and well worth the money they are asking for them. Going forward I will use the Hoka Mach 4's for speed work as well as long run efforts. I will be picking up the Puma Velocity Nitro for easy long run workouts that may include a progression run effort especially when I am going to be transitioning from road to trail surfaces.
