2025 11 30 Advent Sunday [We Are Not God’s AI] Matthew 1:1,16 Hymn 94 Matthew 1: 1 A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham: 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. (NIV) [We Are Not God’s AI 하나님의 AI가 아니다] We often contemplate our faith: Does God make us believe in Jesus? Do we choose to believe in Jesus ourselves? Or is it a combination of our effort and God’s work? Many theologians have debated these questions throughout history. People outside the faith may see the genealogy of Jesus as a legend or a saga about a religious hero or a patron saint, because they do not understand why Jesus is our Saviour and the one who leads us to a heaven beyond imagination. Remarkably, Jesus came from a family that included murderers, cheats, cowards, adulterers, and liars. 1) In particular, five women in Jesus’ lineage-Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary- stand out as unusual, being Gentiles or having scandalous stories surrounding their births. Moreover, the timing of Jesus’ birth doesn’t make faith easier. People today may wonder why God did not choose to come in an age of modern communication and technology, performing miracles here and now for the whole world to see. Sometimes, we wish that God would remove the ‘faith’ from our faith. 2) Our reason and senses alone are not enough for belief. God gives us faith and enables us to use it in our lives. He invites us to seek Him, even though He already dwells within us, and creates opportunities for us to encounter Him and one another. We are not automatic believers or programmed like AI robots. Rather, we are saved despite being sinners, just as Jesus’ own family was. Guhyun Woo ---------------------------- 1) Douglas Sean O’Donnell, Matthew (Wheaton: Crossway, 2013), p.37. Prayer Father, thank you for not making us like AI, but for making us your children in Jesus. Please give us stronger faith so that we may know Jesus more and more. We also ask that you relieve us from all our troubles. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. #LondonSeoulChurch #Rev_WooGuhyeon #WooGuhyeon #런던서울교회 #우구현목사
