The area of Kawhmu south of Yangon, was not famous for much, until opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi decided to run for parliament by standing in this seat. Now, a community that had its political voice silenced for so long by the army, is embracing the process of democracy. Suu Kyi chose this constituency because it is a poor, rural part of the country. It is also part of the Irrawady Delta region which was hit hard by cyclone Nargis in 2008, a disaster that was largely ignored by the military government. Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay reports from Kawhmu, Myanmar. At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives.
