Take a close look at a common arrangement of springs. A block is pulled in opposite directions by two springs. As the block is displaced from equilibrium the force by one spring increases and the force by the other spring decreases. The proof that the springs are in parallel comes from looking at the graph of the force vs position curves of the springs which can be produced using each springs 'spring constant'. Recognizing that each spring starts at equilibrium, the force by one spring increases, and the other decreases when the block is pushed in one direction. Ultimately this puts the spring combination in parallel even though the springs may appear to be in series. This problem commonly comes up in introductory mechanics courses such as high school physics, AP Physics 1, AP Physics C, A Level Physics, and the JEE Mains.
