How can plastic waste become a durable, climate-resilient infrastructure solution in Asia and the Pacific? In Episode 30 of the Green Roads Webinar Series, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) explores how recycled plastics can be responsibly engineered into asphalt pavements and other transport infrastructure in Papua New Guinea. This session examines the scale of plastic waste leakage, infrastructure gaps, and the technical pathways to transforming waste into long-lasting road materials. Papua New Guinea generates approximately 285,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually, with more than half escaping into the environment. At the same time, the country faces expanding transport infrastructure needs under the Connect PNG program. This webinar discussed how circular economy approaches can support sustainable road construction while reducing environmental harm. Professor Filippo Giustozzi (RMIT University) shares technical insights on: Engineering recycled plastics into asphalt pavements; Durability considerations for plastic-modified bitumen; Waste management challenges in Papua New Guinea; Opportunities for integrating recycled materials into road infrastructure; and Broader applications, including drainage systems, noise barriers, geosynthetics, and urban infrastructure. The session highlighted how proper processing, performance-based design, and collaboration between government and industry are critical to ensuring environmental and economic benefits. ADB’s Green Roads Webinar Series brings together experts to advance climate-resilient road design, sustainable transport infrastructure, and low-carbon construction practices across developing member countries. Learn how circular economy solutions can strengthen transport systems while addressing plastic pollution in the Pacific.
