Released in 1995 as the second single from their first album Frogstomp, “Pure Massacre” was written by Daniel Johns and Ben Gillies and produced by Kevin “Caveman” Shirley. It’s a straight-up grunge sledgehammer that still sounds massive today.  The song was a major follow-up to “Tomorrow,” reaching No. 2 in both Australia and New Zealand, and climbing into the U.S. rock charts (No. 17 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks and No. 12 on Album Rock Tracks). It later appeared on The Best Of: Volume 1 and the Frogstomp 20th Anniversary editions, keeping it firmly in the “fan-favorite” category decades later.  According to interviews with Daniel Johns, the lyrics were inspired by the Bosnian War; he wanted to write about the senselessness of violence instead of the usual teenage topics. That’s why you get those images of “people dying for no reason at all” and families being torn apart — all delivered with that crushing riff and raw teenage angst.
