Cincinnati isn’t exactly tiny, but hometown kid Arin Ray knew he had to make a move in order to realize his dream. As a teen he slipped into L.A. to write his story, and hit the ground running. His writing and singing skills landed him studio time with the likes of Usher and Jeremih. “It’s been really cool to see how [those artists] they do their thing,” he said of taking notes from the contemporary R&B icons. “I can implement that into my strategy.” Ray’s collaborative nature drew Ty Dolla $ign, YG and SiR to last year’s debut, ‘Platinum Dreams.’ This winter’s surprise drop, ‘Phase II - EP,’ features Kehlani and “drastically different” approach to his songwriting.
