(27 Jul 2019) Tunisia's capital came to a standstill Saturday as the country prepared to bury its first democratically elected president, Beji Caid Essebsi, who died in office at 92. Huge crowds flooded the streets of Tunis for Essebsi's funeral procession. Exceptional security measures were in place for the event after threats linked to the Islamic State extremist group. The 20-kilometre (12-mile) procession was closed to all traffic, from the palace to the Jellaz cemetery on the other side of Tunis. Arab leaders and French President Emmanuel Macron were among those who attended the funeral ceremony. Essebsi won Tunisia's first free election after the 2011 uprising that brought the country democracy and unleashed uprisings around the Arab world.
