Bach’s Prelude in C minor (BWV 999), presented with harmonic analysis using Roman numerals and chord symbols. The full score has been entirely re-engraved by me using the MuseScore software for clarity and accuracy. For this edition, I referred primarily to the earliest surviving source: the manuscript by Johann Peter Kellner (c. 1725). According to Kellner, the piece was originally composed for lute, although his transcription is arranged for keyboard. Today, the Prelude is frequently performed on piano, harpsichord, lute, classical guitar, and related instruments. Given the lack of specific tempo indications in Kellner’s manuscript, the tempo has been subject to wide interpretation. Modern piano performances often adopt a moderate Allegro around 112–115 bpm or faster, but such speeds may feel less natural considering the original lute practice. Many renowned lutenists and guitarists prefer a slower tempo around 75 bpm, allowing natural phrasing and greater interpretative freedom. This approach, in my opinion, better respects the character and expressive possibilities of the piece: I thus followed this approach for this performance. The Prelude features a steady melodic and rhythmic pattern with subtle harmonic changes from measure to measure. The harmonic analysis - including clearly marked pedal points throughout the score and video - helps performers gain a deeper understanding of harmonic progressions and supports effective memorization. The harmonic development characteristics of the piece led me to avoid assuming that certain diminished chords functioned as "temporary dominants" (vii°7/...), with one exception: in measure 38, the B°7/G chord (which could also be marked as G7♭9) clearly resolves to the Cm/G chord in measure 39. I thus adopted the notation vii°7/iv in the Roman numeral analysis for this chord alone. Please bear in mind that some chords present interpretative ambiguities due to the compositional style. The last two eighth notes in the bass line of each measure help define the underlying harmony more precisely. For example, in measure 24, I labelled a chord as F♯°7 (with a pedal point on D), which could also be interpreted as D7♭9. However, the strong instability from the succession of diminished chords, combined with the dominant pedal’s stability, led me to favor the diminished chord interpretation. Most doubts can generally be resolved by carefully observing accidentals case by case. For instance, in measure 25, while in G minor with a pedal point on D, one might be misled by the right hand’s initial notes into assuming a chord rooted on Bb. Yet, observing the C# in the left hand reveals it as “C#°7” (notes: C#, E, G, Bb, though not in that order). A Bb°7 chord would be enharmonically equivalent but would require a Db in the score, not a C#. Thoughts on the use of sustain pedal: While the sustain pedal was not available on Baroque keyboard instruments, a moderate and thoughtful use could sometimes help evoke the resonance of the lute.
