In what has become a mostly sterile landscape of chain coffee shops and Italian themed restaurants that want to be in Rome, Fort Greene still has Brooklyn Moon. It’s one of those places in New York City that will forever be associated with an iconic cultural movement. Brooklyn Moon is a living connection to the glorious Black Cultural Renaissance that blossomed in this neighborhood during the 90s. Stars like Erykah Badu, Chris Rock, and many more were patrons and performers here who went on to conquer the world. The poetry scene on Open Mic Night became legendary. In this video, I sit down with Mike Thompson, owner of Brooklyn Moon. Despite the challenges, this café/restaurant/event space has weathered the wave of gentrification wiping out historically Black neighborhoods like Fort Greene. The Pandemic came along and made survival even more difficult, and most Black owned businesses didn’t get the assistance they were due. When I visit Fort Greene and see Brooklyn Moon still standing proud on Fulton St., I’m relieved. There’s also a sense of pride in seeing a holdout standing strong against the whitewashing of the hood. I’m also reminded that we have to support places like Brooklyn Moon. Go and enjoy the great food and drinks, and feel the history. Let’s make sure this remains a place in Fort Greene for us to connect with our past and celebrate a resilient present. If you can’t visit for whatever reason, you can still help preserve this physical link to Brooklyn’s Black cultural legacy by donating the price of a coffee to the GoFundMe campaign. We cannot lose this place like Harlem lost the Lenox Lounge. We got this!! https://www.gofundme.com/f/give-the-m... 🕒 VIDEO CHAPTERS: 00:00 Introduction 0:10 Arrival at Brooklyn Moon 0:52 Brooklyn Moon's Origin and Purpose 1:58 Recent Difficulty 3:24 GoFundMe Campaign 3:59 Reflection and Resilience 4:25 Closing #blackhistorymonth2024 #blackownedbusiness #blackvoices #blackvoicesmatter #brooklynmoon #blackexcellence #fortgreene #poetrycommunity #poetrylovers #gentrification #blackhistory #brooklynvibes #communitysupport #nycrestaurant #gofundme #gofundmehelp #gofundmecampaign #gofundmeplease #blackbusinessesmatter #culturalheritage #buyblack #buyblackeconomics #buyblackowned #youtubeblack #youtubeblackvoices #youtubeblackvoices #blackpride #blackbohemia #90srewind #90s #90shiphop #blackhistorymonth
