Shaykh Talal Ahdab gives a Khutbah about a young man who grew up to be a great Sahaaba (companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him)): Abdullah Ibn Abbas (R.A.). More Shaykh Talal: http://mcceastbay.org/talal This sermon was delivered at the Muslim Community Center - East Bay (MCC East Bay) in Pleasanton, California on Friday, January 8, 2021. About Shaykh Talal Ahdab Until recently, Shaykh Talal was CEO of the Razi Education, a provider of educational solutions for K-12, colleges and universities in the private and public sector. From 2008-10, Razi was commissioned by ZHIC to develop a curriculum for New Muslims that include 11 books, four audio CDs and four DVDs. Since then, the series was translated into five languages. In 2010, the Islamic Teacher Education Program (ITEP) was launched; a one-year online certificate developed in collaboration with OISE, University of Toronto. Shaykh Talal studied the Islamic disciplines and over the last 25 years, he has been teaching the Islamic disciplines to senior students and junior scholars. With focus on Tafsir, Usul and Theology, his interests include modern challenges and how to extract solutions from Islam’s rich tradition of knowledge and scholarship to address those challenges. In addition to teaching privately, he sometimes serves as Khatib in various mosques in the Greater Toronto Area. He also lectured on Prophetic pedagogy at OISE at the University of Toronto. Abdullah Ibn Abbas (peace be upon him) ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-ʿAbbās, also called Ibn Abbās, byname Al-ḥibr (“the Doctor”), or Al-baḥr (“the Sea”), (born c. 619—died 687/688, aṭ-Ṭāʾif, Arabia), a Companion of the prophet Muḥammad, one of the greatest scholars of early Islām, and the first exegete of the Qurʾān. In the early struggles for the caliphate, Ibn ʿAbbās supported ʿAlī and was rewarded with the governorship of Baṣra. Subsequently he defected and withdrew to Mecca. During the reign of Muʿāwiyah he lived in the Hejaz, but frequently travelled to Damascus, the capital. After the death of Muʿāwiyah, he opposed ʿIbn az-Zubayr, whom he refused to recognize as caliph, and was forced to flee to aṭ-Ṭāʾif, where he died. Ibn ʿAbbas is renowned for his knowledge of both sacred and profane tradition and for his critical interpretations of the Qurʾān. From his youth he gathered information concerning the words and deeds of Muḥammad from other Companions and gave classes on interpretation of the Qurʾān, his commentaries on which were later collected.
