All About Dragonflies and Damselflies Have you ever seen a shiny, flying insect zipping around a pond? It was probably a dragonfly or a damselfly! They look a lot alike, like cousins, and are often called "Odontates" (which means "toothed ones") by scientists, because they have big teeth for catching food! Let's learn how to tell them apart and discover their amazing lives. Dragonfly vs. Damselfly: How to Spot the Difference It's easy to get them mixed up! Here are the three best ways to tell them apart: 1. Wings at Rest: The Easiest Clue! Dragonfly: When a dragonfly lands, it holds its wings straight out to the sides, like an airplane. They can't fold them back. Damselfly: When a damselfly lands, it usually holds its wings closed together straight up over its body, like a butterfly. 2. Body Shape Dragonfly: They are usually stocky and strong. Their bodies look a bit like a flying twig. Damselfly: They are delicate and slender. Their bodies look like a thin little thread. 3. Eyes Dragonfly: Their huge eyes are so big they usually touch each other at the top of the head. Damselfly: Their eyes are smaller and are separated, looking like they're on the sides of the head, like a hammerhead shark! The Amazing Life of a Dragonfly Dragonflies and damselflies don't start their lives as flying insects. They have a cool life cycle with three stages. Stage 1: The Egg Mommy dragonfly or damselfly lays her eggs. She might drop them into the water, stick them on a water plant, or even poke a hole in a plant stem to put them inside. The water is the key! Stage 2: The Nymph (The Underwater Monster!) This is the longest part of their life. The baby, called a nymph (or naiad), hatches from the egg and lives underwater. It can live underwater for a whole year, or even longer! What do they look like? They don't have wings and look a bit like a creepy-crawly bug. What's their secret weapon? They have a special lip that shoots out to grab prey like tadpoles, mosquito larvae, and small fish! They are fierce hunters, even as babies. How do they breathe? They have gills to breathe underwater. Damselfly nymphs have three leaf-like gills at the tip of their bottom, like a fancy tail! Stage 3: The Amazing Emergence When the nymph is ready, it does something incredible. It crawls out of the water, up a plant stem or a rock. Its skin then splits open down the back, and the adult dragonfly slowly and carefully pulls itself out! It has to pump fluid into its wings to make them expand and then wait for them to dry and harden before it can fly away. This is like a superhero transformation! Stage 4: The Adult (The Flying Ace!) Now it's the beautiful flying insect we see in the sky. Its main jobs are to eat and to find a mate to start the cycle all over again. Superpowers and Cool Facts! Dragonflies and damselflies are built for one thing: being amazing hunters. Super Sight: Their giant eyes are made of thousands of tiny lenses, giving them almost 360-degree vision! They can spot movement from far away. Master of Flight: They are some of the best fliers in the insect world. They can fly straight up and down, hover like a helicopter, fly backward, and even turn in mid-air instantly! The Hunters: They use their spiny legs to make a "basket" and scoop up their prey mid-flight. What's on the menu? Mosquitoes, flies, gnats, and other small bugs. They are great for us because they eat so many mosquitoes! Ancient Insects: Giant dragonflies lived a long, long time ago, even before the dinosaurs! Some had wings as wide as a seagull. Fun Activities Be a Spotter: Next time you're near a pond or stream, see if you can find a dragonfly or damselfly. Use the clues above (wings, body, eyes) to figure out which one it is! Draw Your Favorite: Draw a picture of a dragonfly with its wings out like an airplane, and a damselfly with its wings up over its back. Don't forget the big eyes! Backyard Hunt: Even if you don't have a pond, you might see them in a garden or field hunting for bugs. Watch how they fly—can you see them hover?
