What do the settings on a pool filter mean? The multiport valve explained. In this video I explain what the pool filter valve positions are and how to use them when doing pool maintenance. These pool filter settings include filter, rinse, backwash, closed and recirculate. I also show how to operate a multiport valve ensuring that the pool pump selector doesn't get damaged and also how a multiport valve operates. Filter: This is the setting that you will use the most and which should be set when the pool pump is running on the timer. It circulates water through the skimmers and through the filter (sand, DE or cartridge) and returns filtered, clean water back to the pool. Backwash: After you have vacuumed, particularly if the pool was dirty, you will probably need to back wash which reverses the flow of water in the filter which removes any dust or other debris that the filter has removed. The water flows out of the system and not back into the pool. Backwashing helps to restore the suction of this is reduced by reducing backpressure. Reda my article on backwashing, step by step - https://easypoolcleaning.com/how-to-b... Rinse: This is used immediately after backwashing and basically it settles the sand back down in the filter. Recirculate: This just moves water around the system without passing through the filter. It can be used if you have just shocked the pool or added a quantity of chemicals to prevent that going through the filter. Closed: This shuts of the flow of water. It may be used if maintaining the pipework or if emptying the pump strainer basket of leaves to prevent air getting in the system. Hopefully that is the pool pump settings explained so that anyone can understand.
