The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award scheme - which encourages millions of young people to challenge themselves through community service and physical activity - is one Prince Phillip’s lasting legacies. Prince Philip described the award scheme as a “do-it-yourself growing up kit”. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Australian CEO Peter Kaye told Sky News, “what he engineered was a concept that was for its time very, very unusual, very innovative”. “If we were describing it today, we’d be describing it as design a program in open architecture because he created a framework of … four areas of challenge. “They did not contain prescribed activities so young people working with trained adults would identify suitable actives and set personal bests, set goals they would achieve. “So the reason it’s been so successful and has gone from generation to generation was that original clever design”. Mr Kaye told said the four areas of challenge include community volunteering, personal life skill development, improving physical health, and a team challenge in an unfamiliar environment. “The key to it is that they are done over an extended period of time,” he said. “So the impact of the award on a young person’s positive behaviour is because they’re doing these activities in their community regularly, and typically over nine to 12 months”.
