Clive Davis tried to sign The Kinks to Columbia two times and failed, but finally got them to join his Arista label. He was able to help them get back on track in line with their 60's run of hits with the 1977 LP "Sleepwalker" with fans and critics loving the return to form. The following year, Ray Davies wrote "A Rock & Roll Fantasy" which the Kinks recorded and got a #30 hit out of it their first Top 40 single since 1970's gender bending song of love "Lola" which got to #9. Clive relates that "Low Budget" from 1979 successfully tapped into the malaise that was a sign of the times, especially in the lyrics of "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman". The lyrics decry the mess this world is in, something I think that a lot of you can relate to today, to be a better, stronger version of yourself and find a place to run away to escape the crushing chaos, so here is my remix for you. "Low Budget" became the Kinks most successful album in their history. It was their 18th album and their tour to support it brought them to the attention of arena rockers across the US who fully embraced them. Released on April 28, 1979 at #85 the same week as "We Are Family" and "Georgy Porgy", it peaked at #41 in June and spent a total of 11 weeks on the Hot100.
