(29 Jan 2020) Members of Chile's Human Rights Commission denounced Chile's justice system regarding abuse committed by security forces during the protests that have been sweeping the country for the past three months. Speaking at a news conference Wednesday, the organization said over 4,300 complaints had been received by the government prosecutor's office but only 30 cases had been taken forward. "We have not seen a genuine commitment to human rights causes from the higher courts of justice," said Commission President Carlos Margotta, who compared the alleged failure of justice to impunity during the Pinochet dictatorship. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has travelled to Chile numerous times to verify the human rights situation. "We don't want any more comrades killed, we don't want any more of our people killed, we don't want any more eye traumas, we don't want any more blind people," said Marta Valdés, the spokeswoman for Eye Victims Coordinators, an organization helping those who suffered eye injuries during the protests. The Coordinator of The National Institute of Human Rights (INDH) has previously reported that the government failed to contact them or provide any type of support regarding cases of abuse linked to the protests. In addition, they allege the government's health program aimed at assisting people injured during the protests is deficient, especially in the provinces. A total of 17 individual and group cases have been filed on behalf of people suffering eye injuries and human rights violations during the protests against various government agencies, including the office of President Sebastian Pinera.
